[00:00:01] Speaker A: Welcome to unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight for the weekend of January 17, 2025. Got a great show coming up for you. Got music from Carolyn Shapiro, Ali, Beers, Gozer, Canela, and a premiere of Seas Atlantis, brand new single. They're doing a cover of a classic Rage against the Machine song and you can hear it here first. And it's all coming up. So without further ado, let's get. [00:00:31] Speaker B: Weekend alright. Andy Skullin is such a good dude. The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to. He's got some cool stuff he'd like to share with you. Yeah, you. It's the weekend. You know what you should do? It's the weekend spotlight. The weekend. [00:00:46] Speaker C: Alright. [00:00:46] Speaker B: The Weekend spotlight. [00:00:48] Speaker A: Outside my way all right, so up first we have Friday at Downtown Social in Glens Falls. Little Saints will be performing from Saint 6 to 9pm Little Saints, of course, a duo of Andy Arnold and Natalie Santini. They're amazing musicians, really great songs. It's sure to be a cool show. So get out to Downtown Social in Glens Falls. Show starts at 6:00. Go check out Little Saints. All right. Also happening on Friday this time down in Troy, Carolyn Shapiro will be playing at 518 craft starting at 8pm and what we're going to do right now is hear a song from Carolyn Shapiro. This is River Meets the Sea and it's right here on unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight. [00:01:44] Speaker D: The days are getting shorter now the year has come and gone Somehow I wish I could go back to those times when you were just on my mind Driving down the avenue we're stuck in traffic But I'm here with you there's no place that I would. Where the river river meets the sea river meets the sea where the river meets the sea the wind that draws me to my bone it's been a while since I've been home I wish I could stare at that city now Driving on the west side highway down Driving down the avenue I'm stuck in traffic But I'm here with you there's no place that I would rather be than where the river. Where the river river meets the sea the sea where the river meets the. [00:03:34] Speaker C: Sea. [00:03:41] Speaker D: Remember when Hannah's in June? You come on by watch old cartoon you drive around Nowhere to go next to you I feel at home Driving down the avenue while stuck in traffic But I'm here with you there's no place that I would be than where the river where the river river eats the sea river eats the sea where the river meets the sea. [00:04:59] Speaker C: River meets. [00:05:00] Speaker D: The sea where the river meets. [00:05:13] Speaker A: That was river meets the Sea. Carolyn Shapiro right here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. I really love that song. And I know it's like the literal dead of winter, but there's something about that song that kind of makes me feel like I'm, you know, sitting by a stream or a river or just enjoying spring weather, which is just seems so far off. But thank you, Carolyn, for at least giving me, you know, about. About three minutes of that feeling. Right now we are gonna check in with my friends Jake and Mike in the Bad Music Club, bringing us another band we should know from. Usually from Canada, but, you know, they're. They're very good at reaching out internationally. They've featured bands from Australia, where they have a huge amount of fans. People love Bad Music Club down in Australia, but I think you should definitely check out Bad Music Club as well. But right now we're going to hear a band that they think that we should know. Take it away, boys. [00:06:08] Speaker E: Ali Beers has less than 100 monthly listeners and it's an Ottawa shit post punk band. [00:06:13] Speaker A: Dude, I do anything for Shania Twain. [00:06:15] Speaker E: And so with this band, these guys are fucking hilarious. And they're making great punk rock fucking right there. [00:06:21] Speaker A: It's hardcore, it's heavy, it's punk. It's right up my fucking alley, man. [00:06:25] Speaker E: Man, it's some of the most Canadian content you can imagine. And I wonder if Shania Twain has shown her appreciation. [00:06:31] Speaker A: Ali bears have often led me to handcuff steak. [00:06:35] Speaker E: Their latest release is Twain Wreck, which came out October 14, 2024. [00:06:41] Speaker A: Check it. [00:07:15] Speaker B: I got to go through tonight Got so drunk I lost my brain CK Mustang looking so fine I back down with tears of my own we did it all for Shania Dwayne we did it all for Shania Twain we did it all for Shania Thwait did it all for Shania Twain we did it all for Shania Twain did it all for Shaniah Twain we did it all for Shania Twain we did it opposite I Twain Dwayne Twain Dwayne, Dwayne Let go Here on my shirt and my eyes and my die Puke in the back and gave it to a guy let's go gross the kick down the door Feel secure that I need some more wow. We did it all for tonight's way did it all for tonight's way we did it all for Shania Quaid did it all for tonight's way we did it all for Shania Quaid did it all for tonight's way. We did it all for Shiah Quaid. Set it all for Shania Quaid. [00:08:37] Speaker A: That was Ali Beers with Twain wreck here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. That one brought to us by my friends Jake and Mike in the Bad Music Club. So happening Saturday, we have Same Old Rat, Jupiter Queen, Tom Atkins band, Joe Stump and Last Barrow playing at Empire Underground. It's a hell of a lineup. Empire Underground's been putting on some really sick shows, so go check them out. Same old Rat, Jupiter Queen, Tom Atkinsbahn, Joe Stump and Last Feral. That is Saturday at Empire Underground. Also happening on Saturday, Gozer and Black Tongue Revan will be playing at single cut from 6 to 9. And you know, just the other day I announced the the lineup for my my birthday party, Andy Palooza Part 3, happening May 17th at Single Cut. And Black Tongue Reverend played last year at Andy Palooza 2, and Gozer is playing this year at Andy Palooza 3. So, you know, clearly I think they're both fantastic bands. I think Single Cut is one of the coolest places to catch a band around here and I think you should go check it out. So that is Saturday Gozer and black tongue reverend at single cut starting at 6:00. And right now we're going to hear the latest from Gozer. This one was actually put out, I think just the day or so after Andy Palooza 2 last year. It was a great birthday present to have a new single from Gozer. But anyway, this one's called Dust and it's right here in unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. [00:10:32] Speaker C: I'm drowning in an ocean of scars Courts of the past the ones I discard what the hell am I doing here? What? Watch the stone disappears this we drop the hell that we praise calls why we call to empty grace take my hand will stand alone amongst the ashes we turn the stones. [00:11:12] Speaker B: When I speak it's not alive. [00:11:16] Speaker C: Feel the dirt begin. [00:11:17] Speaker B: To die fading now you must trust. [00:11:24] Speaker C: Everything I touch is dust you can't even hold on to death memory is you can't even hold on to the things you see Surrounded in darkness it's the end you could have been more wrong my friend no one loves us or does the sun we live in dust forever Shun Though we walk with a fallen and a brave Our spirit's wander forever to pray. [00:12:25] Speaker B: When I speak it's not a night till the d be gets a giant fading now you. [00:12:35] Speaker C: Must trust everything I touch that's the Dust. You can't even hold on to death. I'm a heels. You can't even hold on to the things you see? Shrouded in darkness it's the. You couldn't be more wrong, my friend. [00:13:17] Speaker B: The ashes they fall the earth starts to rise in everything that I touch it turns to d. [00:13:36] Speaker C: The action. You can't even hold on to death. You can't even hold on to the things you say? Surrounded in darkness. Is this you. [00:15:11] Speaker A: All right? That was dust Gozer. And you can catch them with black tongue. Reverend Saturday at Single Cut north from 6 to 9pm and of course, Gozer is in the lineup of Andy Palooza 3. And that lineup is shortwave radio band. We have AB the Autocrat with Mistah, Pigs and Exquisite, known collectively as Pigsquisite. We have Brother Junction. And then, as I mentioned, Gozer will be there as well. There'll be. There'll be more details. We're gonna make it a little more than just a normal show. We're gonna try to make it, you know, a proper birthday party with some live local music and make it a. Make it a thing, make it a throwdown. So, you know, save the date right now May 17th at single cut, and I'll. I'll bring you more details as it gets closer. So also happening on Saturday, we have Seize Atlantis at backyard barbecue from 8 to midnight. They're gonn doing three full sets. There is no cover and, you know, obviously Cs put on a hell of a show. And I actually have a little surprise for the Seas Atlantis fans out there. I have ahead of its release on Bandcamp, it's going to be released Friday. So as you're hearing this, it'll be released tomorrow on Band Camp. And then sometime down the road, according to Season Atlantis lead singer James Mullen, uh, sometime down the road, it'll be out on Spotify and Apple Music and all the. All the other places. But you will be able to hear it on Bandcamp Friday. But you're gonna be able to hear it right now. And it is Seize Atlantis live at Jivehive Live, doing a cover of the classic Rage against the Machine song Bulls on Parade. So you're hearing it here first and for at least one day. Here is the only place you'll be able to hear it until it's released on Bandcamp Camp tomorrow. But then you can go support Seas Atlantis and buy a copy of the single and make sure you stream it a shitload. But anyway, Seize Atlantis world premiere this is bulls on parade unsigned 518's weekend spotl. [00:17:52] Speaker B: Come on in there, Come on in there. [00:20:54] Speaker A: Steve's Atlantis doing their cover of Rage against the Machines. Bulls on parade Live at Jivehive Live. And you're hearing it here first on unsigned 5 and 8's weekend spotlight. So right now we're going to check in with my friend Brendan. Sometimes he's known as AB the Autocrat and he has his non alcoholic beer reviews. And, you know, and it's funny, I've been talking to people, people that had no idea that there were so many choices in non alcoholic brews. And there is literally anything you could think of. There's a. A non alcoholic version of them mostly. And if you've never tried them, just leave it to Brandon to try it for you. He will sip it, score it, and then slam it here on I Miss Beer. Oh, okay. [00:21:43] Speaker G: My name is Brendan. Brendan. And I miss beer. And on this episode of I Miss Beer, we're gonna be trying Sam Adams, Golden. Okay, the short sleeve flannels did not work out. You know what we gotta do? Sniff it, sip it, score it, slam it. It smells pretty dang good. Let's sip it. Smooth, crisp, lemony. Does taste like a half. A little bit. This is quite pleasant. Fantastic summer beer, sunshine beer. I would have plenty of these riverside, poolside, beachside. [00:22:15] Speaker B: Wow. [00:22:16] Speaker G: This thing is weighing down my shirt. Kind of a pain. What I like about this is it's not trying to do anything fancy. You know exactly what you get. A golden ale. [00:22:23] Speaker D: I love gold. [00:22:26] Speaker G: Okay, final verdict. I'm going to go 77 on this. Time to slam it. [00:22:33] Speaker A: That was Brendan with I miss beer. And make sure you go follow. Follow @ImessBeer on Instagram and YouTube and then you can see the video component to the audio reviews that I am playing here on the show. So as you may know by now, you know T.J. foster of Metroland has been putting together for a couple months now. He calls it hot singles in your area. And it's basically single releases from 518 musicians. And he. He curates them and puts them together and releases them in a nice neat list on themetroland.com and you can listen to everything right there from the page. And then he hands it off to me and I create an official Spotify playlist to go along with every month's version of hot singles in your area brought to you by Metroland Now. So what I'm gonna do on the show every week is just pull a single from the hot singles in your area and play it. So there's not really going to be a theme. It's not going to be attached to any show coming. It's just going to be, hey, I want to hear this song. So this week I'm going to play the latest Canela single. This one is called Groomer. You can find it everywhere, but you should check it out on Metroland Now's hot singles in your area, official playlists on Spotify, and then over there on themetroland.com. but right now it's Canela with groomer on unsigned 518 weekend spotlight. [00:24:27] Speaker C: Be waiting for me proud of me these babies your every chair begging for believers every join your gotta be you're holding me down you're dragging me down you tear me s SA. [00:27:06] Speaker A: That is Canela with groomer here on unsigned 518 weekend spotlights. And you can find that on Metroland Now's hot singles in your area playlist for the month of December, curated by TJ Foster. And TJ actually spoke with Juliana of Canela a couple weeks ago and the interview is up on themetroland.com so you can go check that out as well. So that is it for this week's weekend Spotlight. I thank you so much for listening, listening, for supporting live music and local music and just for being here and, and assuring me that I'm not just talking into a void, but people actually sometimes listen, so it's really cool. But anyway, I am Andy scullin. This is unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. I'll see you on the road. Unsigned 518 is produced and hosted by me, Andy Scullin. New episodes are available every week.
