[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome to unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight for the weekend of February 7, 2025. I got a great show coming up for you. I have music from Deanna Deluc, Girl Love, Beached Bodies. Also going to check in with Joseph Biss. He's back with Joseph's Folk Corner. Gonna play a song from Joseph and his friend Alicia Maesier Van Scoy. Also, I miss Beer bands you should know and so much more. So without further ado, let's get started. [00:00:31] Speaker B: The Weekend Spotlight. The weekend. All right. [00:00:34] Speaker C: Andy Scullin is such a good dude. [00:00:37] Speaker B: The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to. He's got some cool stuff he'd like. [00:00:41] Speaker C: To share with you. [00:00:42] Speaker B: Yeah, you. [00:00:43] Speaker C: It's the weeknd. [00:00:44] Speaker B: You know what you should do? It's the Weekend Spotlight. The weekend. Alright. [00:00:48] Speaker C: Weekend Spotlight. [00:00:49] Speaker B: Unsight by way. [00:00:51] Speaker A: So what we're gonna do first is my good friend Joseph had been checking in with Joseph's Folk Corner and then he had to take a little, little time off to go work on some things. But, but now he's back. And so to celebrate Joseph's return, we're going to have another edition of Joseph's Folk Corner. Find out a little bit about what Joseph has been up to in his absence. And then we're also going to find out where he's going to be playing and some other shows and artists coming up in the folk world. And we're then going to play some music from Joseph Biss and also another artist that he'll be playing with this weekend, Alicia Macer Vanskoy. But after that little hiatus, it feels good to say over to you, Joseph. [00:01:35] Speaker C: Thanks, Andy. And thank you folks. It's me, Joseph. And we're back for some Joseph's Folk Corner. Corner Corner. And yeah, yeah, I've been away. Maybe not as much physically as metamorphically, igneously, something like that. I've been working on an album and I'm getting ready to tour that entire album, which starts this very Friday, Friday the 7th. I'm gonna be playing up at Beck's, that's up in North Creek. And I'm gonna be joined by my good friend, Alicia Maesier Van Skoy. If you folks have caught me on tour before, she, she opens up a lot of shows and I, I think that is a. It's so swell. But then one I want to put a big emphasis on is on Saturday, this Saturday, February 8th, at the Charles Rwood Theater, you know, that big theater in Glens Falls. It's going to be Vegan Fest and I am so very excited. This is the second time I've been to Vegan Fest, but this time we're going to be joined also by the Paper Prince. He's going to be kicking off the tunes around 11 o'clock and then Alicia is going to be playing, I believe, at 1 o'clock and then I will be playing at 2 o'clock. This will also be putting a lot of focus on good vegan food, vegetarian food, all that kind of stuff in the area. And yeah, there's so much good things to eat, good things to look at and it will be pretty cool. But after Vegan Fest takes its siesta until the summer, I'll be going on still with tour, the album, my next album always will be coming out February 21st. So the next day, February 22nd, you better believe we're throwing an album party. So that's gonna be at Kitcha Vibe up in Glens Falls, New York. And then February 28th, I'm heading back up to Plattsburgh. I'm at the Coffee Cat Espresso bar. Next day, March 1st, I'm going to be at Coroga Lake. We're going to be at Pine Lake Lodge. Stump City Brewery Brewing has a pop up there. So we'll be there. They'll be slinging beer. I'll be playing folk. The 13th, I'll be back out to Portland, Maine at the blue. March 22nd, we'll be down in Troy, New York. We'll be at Mojo's Cafe and Gallery where Alicia will be joining me yet again. And then we'll be finishing off Tour on the 23rd back in Lake George. But yeah, I appreciate you all. I look forward to seeing you folks out there. I know we look forward to seeing you out there for like Saturday and some of those joint shows. Yeah, that's how you do it. You go out, you support local music. It's a pretty cool thing to do. And it, it only cost you your ticket. And a lot of the shows, they don't even cost that. So you go there and then you buy some merch so you can support the folks. That's how it goes. But yeah, Ta ta, folks. I appreciate y'all. I'll see you soon. [00:04:04] Speaker A: Take care. [00:04:04] Speaker C: Ta ta. Dove, Zenya. Bye Bye. And back to you, Andy. [00:04:08] Speaker A: Thanks, Joseph. And make sure you go check out Joseph this weekend, playing Friday and then Saturday at Vegan Fest with Paper Prince and Alicia Van Scoy. Really good to have you back, Joseph. And check out Joseph's music. But also Just know that he's a wonderful human being, which goes really far in my book. So he's got great music, he's a great human being doing a lot of stuff, and we missed you. So welcome back, Joseph. What we're going to do right now to continue the celebration of the return of Joseph Bist is we're actually going to play a song of his that I believe does not come out until tomorrow. I may be wrong. I know it's not out as this episode airs, but it'll be out soon. It's called Ms. Timberdoodles March, the latest from Joseph Biss, right here on unsigned 518's weekend. [00:05:33] Speaker C: Frogs like fog but raspberries like psychedelia. [00:05:49] Speaker B: Mama would construct her stuff work than. [00:06:00] Speaker C: Maternal glory A mother of one the snipe sings has springtime speak to me the fruit tree creeks they stay so. [00:06:34] Speaker B: Grand. [00:06:38] Speaker C: In the bar where the Tallinn. [00:06:41] Speaker B: Mad could hobble on. [00:06:45] Speaker C: You see the woodcock. The woodcock is a marvelous creature known as the bog sucker. In some common circles, they normally have one, two, maybe three babies. But on a monumentous occasion such as this, they had four, all five of them, strutting around and strutting their stuff. You know why the scientists think they do the strutting? Well, stick at them pesky little earthworms up to the surface. And you know what the mother does when she finds all them earthworms finding themselves up at the top of the surface? Well, she throws them in her mouth. She crunches them all up, she masticates them into their baby's mouth. Because, you know, that's what mothers do with casta beans. She makes rice and tea. Let him play in fields for the. [00:07:51] Speaker B: Finest. [00:07:55] Speaker C: When fighter flies kicks it with. [00:08:00] Speaker B: Us. [00:08:04] Speaker C: We trot our heart we clench our guards Pack our scabs Pack them. [00:08:13] Speaker B: With dirts. [00:08:17] Speaker C: Parasympathetic cloth the choice was. [00:08:23] Speaker B: Her. [00:08:26] Speaker C: But now hers alone to help. [00:08:36] Speaker A: A man. [00:08:39] Speaker C: Become the law his leather. [00:08:45] Speaker B: Flash. [00:08:48] Speaker C: A mossy hole There's a yarn the fledgling for. [00:09:22] Speaker A: That's the latest from Joseph Biss. Ms. Timberdoodles March. And it'll be out Friday. I can. I confirmed that while the song was playing, so it'll be out tomorrow and you can check that out. And Joseph is back, starting up a tour, playing shows again. And I again really implore that you go check him out. He plays with a great group of musicians as well. So what we're going to do right now is continue the celebration of Joseph's return with a song from his friend Alicia Masier. Van Scoy. This one featuring Luke Van Scoy. It's called fine here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. [00:10:20] Speaker B: I didn't believe in time until it mopped your face. I had not known what was mine till I exist in your space People they'll say I'm refined until I speak my mind Then they'll say my oh my, oh my, oh my, oh my. She turned out high, she's turned doing fine. Forgotten mind is hard by the sound of a deep breathing smokestack that whisper so long and not and it size fine. Oh my, oh my, oh my, oh my. He turned out fine. He's doing fine, fine. We sing until it is magically a sing. What phase of the moon will make a thing about you? Will make a dream about you? And we'll pray. Oh my, oh my, oh my oh my. We turned out fine. We're doing fine. You lost your When I gave up my night Laying awake at night wishing that we could choose Wishing that I was you I wish that I was you. Then I would say my oh my, oh my oh my oh my. I turned out fine. I'm doing fine, fine, fine. [00:14:07] Speaker A: Alicia, Macy or Van Scoy. Featuring Luke Van Scoy with a fine here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlights. And we have a lot more show left to go. And right now we're gonna check in with my friend Brendan for this week's edition of I miss Beer. [00:14:22] Speaker B: Oh. [00:14:25] Speaker C: My name is Brendan and I miss beer. And on this episode of I miss Beer, we're going to be trying sober carpenter blond ale. And it's Friday. Polo week has officially ended, but it might return. Snip it, sip it, score it, Slam. Smells very interesting. I have to smell that again. It kind of smelled like a hot dog. Doesn't mean the beer is bad. [00:14:47] Speaker A: Let's give it a sip. [00:14:49] Speaker C: I'm sure there's some scientific term for what I'm smelling, but I don't smell that hot dog dog smelling. But I did initially, which I don't hate cuz I love hot dogs. It's very balanced, tiny bit of sweetness, nothing crazy though. It's a very straightforward blond ale. [00:15:02] Speaker A: This is another drink, two or three. [00:15:04] Speaker C: Of them on a long hot day kind of beer. Yeah, it's funny how that smell just goes away once the air hits it. But I still remember it. All right, let's score it. I'm going to go 77. Really good. Let's end the week strong and slam it. [00:15:19] Speaker A: It's so cold once it hits your Lips. All right, so that is Brendan with I Miss Beer. And coming up on Saturday, we have Mall Goth, Moth's Frog, Beached Bodies and Gray Monitor at no Fun in Troy. Doors open at 7pm and beach bodies, if you're not familiar with them, they are a very interesting band. And one thing that may not come across in the recorded stuff is that it's not guitars that you're hearing. Will is playing a ukulele, and when they play out, you know, they're. They're just a duo. It's Will and Chen, and they have a backing track of stuff that they've created. And then it's just the two of them out there. And Will said that he likes when. When they come out and it's just the duo. You know, one of them's got a ukulele. Everybody expects something of a certain temperament, I guess. You know, you expect it to be very mellow and. And acoustic and stuff. And Beach Bodies is upbeat and danceable and high tempo, and it does not sound like a ukulele. But long story short, fucking beachbodies rocks, and I want to play a song for you. This is their latest single. It's called Skimming Blue Skies is Beached Bodies right here on Unsigned518's Weekend Spotlight. [00:16:48] Speaker B: Our first tasted freedom on the passenger side no clue where we were going I was there for the ride Tires spun on the stretch of dirt road we drove like the past was gonna explode Teens in costumes in the middle of July Spinning on the dance floor Taking off the fly Waving our cows as we plays Hand out the window Skim the blue sky ceiling star while your records play no more than 10 minutes of party stay but people get busy and friends move away and I wish I was still sharing your summer days with te ins in costume in the middle of July Spinning on the dance floor Ticking off the fly Waving our cows as we blaze by your hands out the window Skin the blue skies Teens and costumes in the middle of July Spinning on the dance floor Taking off the flat Waving our cows as we play Spy and hand out the window Skim and blue sky under cell rings and polished stones we be by the beach when winter comes hold shells up and listen to the ocean Team costumes in the middle of July Spinning on the dance floor Taking off the fly wa Cows as we blaze back your hand out the window Skimming blue skies Teens and costumes in the middle of July Spinning on the dance floor Taking off the plaque Waving the couch as we blaze by your hand out the window Skimming blue Sky. [00:19:11] Speaker A: Beached bodies skimming blue skies here in unsigned 518's weekend spotlights. And you can catch them on Saturday with mall goth and moth's frog and gray monitor at no Fun. Doors open at 7pm so right now we're gonna check in with my friends up in the Bad Music club for this week's edition of Bands you should know. The kreese rule has 3630 monthly listeners and it's a super mid Toronto band. You know what? [00:19:38] Speaker C: No, they're not mid. [00:19:39] Speaker A: They're awesome. [00:19:42] Speaker C: You know when you fold a paper. [00:19:43] Speaker A: Airplane 14 times and you die? [00:19:45] Speaker B: No. [00:19:47] Speaker C: Well that would totally be acceptable with. [00:19:49] Speaker A: This band playing on the radio. [00:19:51] Speaker C: This is some very well put together pop punk. [00:19:54] Speaker A: Perfect for your pre game playlist, buddy. When I listen to this is a hint of propaganda and I'm absolutely loving it. [00:20:00] Speaker C: Don't crowd my goalie. [00:20:02] Speaker A: Fast paced fun. It's wild, it's energetic, it's really, really good. [00:20:06] Speaker C: Punk rock and roll. [00:20:08] Speaker A: Their latest releases, their album Acceptable Rock which came out January 3, 2025. Moldy Toast is okay. [00:20:14] Speaker C: So check these guys out. [00:20:42] Speaker B: There may be someone watching. The crease rules. That one's called Town League. Brought to us by my friends Mike and Jake up in the Bad Music club. They're up in Ontario doing a wonderful thing, kind of the same thing that I'm doing. They're really Great dudes. And especially with all the. The political bullshit going on between our countries, I just want to. Want to give them extra support and love and say that we love you down here and I can't wait to see you. See you dudes again. So check out Bad Music Club. You can find them on Instagram and Spotify and all over the place. They're fucking everywhere. They're huge in Australia too, so go check them out. Also coming up this weekend, there's another really cool show, but rather than me tell you about it, I'm actually going to go right to the source. And I have a special guest on the phone as we speak. And we are here with Girl Love. Hi, how's it going? Hello. [00:24:00] Speaker D: I'm doing well. How are you? [00:24:01] Speaker A: I'm fantastic. It's really, really cool to talk to you. I've certainly been paying attention to your music and your performances, and this is the first time we've met and it's just. I want to say it's really cool to be able to talk to you. [00:24:17] Speaker D: Thank you. Appreciate that. [00:24:18] Speaker A: No problem. So we're here. Basically, you have a show coming up that we want to talk about, and that's the Luna series, and it's coming up on Monday the 10th, am I correct? [00:24:31] Speaker D: That's correct. Yeah. It's February 10th. Doors are at 6:30 and the show's at 7. [00:24:37] Speaker A: And where is that going to be taking place? [00:24:39] Speaker D: Sure, it's at Mount Ida Preservation hall in Troy. [00:24:43] Speaker A: And that's something that's a venue I've been hearing a lot about. Like, I don't know how much you know about the venue or. [00:24:50] Speaker D: Yeah, so I know it's like a. It's a reclaimed church that's being used as a community space right now. [00:24:58] Speaker A: That's great. And like that name has just come up so many times and I'm like, where? Where is that? And then I wonder if you know, because I remember maybe 20 years ago there was a church that had been. They were beginning to reclaim it. I wonder if it's the same one. Interested to find out. So who's going to be playing at. At this show? [00:25:16] Speaker D: This is a solo show. It's just me. I have a couple special guests that will be a surprise. But yeah, it's just me and my guitar and the space and the audience. It's gonna be very like, raw and intimate. It's gonna be a great night. [00:25:34] Speaker A: And you just like you've been playing so many, like, I can almost can't keep track of. But you played The Femme Songwriter Showcase at Mojo's just the other day. Right. [00:25:45] Speaker D: Or last week. Yeah, I curate that. We do it about quarterly. The next one's gonna be April 5th. And sort of the. My mission as a songwriter right now is to write folkish songs that affirm queer right at that intersection between queerness and religious spaces and religious imagery and vocabulary. And the Femme Songwriters Showcase is really about bringing a safe space for the queer community to Troy and uplift female and femme voices. [00:26:25] Speaker C: So. [00:26:26] Speaker A: And is that something, you know, you said there's another one in April. Like, is that going to be a recurring. Like, a recurring series? Like, do you have plans for farther than April? [00:26:36] Speaker D: It sure is, yeah. As long as people show up, I'm. [00:26:41] Speaker A: Sure people will show. And, like, Troy is such a great, great place for that. Like, I, you know, not to put it on me, but, like, I came from a very small town in Vermont, and they never really lived anywhere like, that could even be remotely considered urban. And I moved to Troy and I was like, oh, my God, I love this place. Like, and it's. It's just gotten, like, that was 20 something years ago, and it's just gotten so much cooler and the art scene is exploding, and it just seems like a really, really cool place and a perfect city to have that kind of. [00:27:15] Speaker D: Yeah, I completely agree. I think Troy is great. There's. There's so many different, like, venues that are popping up and ones that I've been there for a really long time. And then Cafe Euphoria is a great place. We really love going there. And I've played there a couple times, but, yeah, Troy's great. [00:27:34] Speaker A: Yeah. And on this show, like, on the weekend Spotlight, I find myself all the time being like, I feel like it should be the Troy Spotlight, because all the shows. And I'm like, ooh, that looks interesting. Yep, it's in Troy. Ooh, what about that one? Oh, also in Troy. So, like, Troy gets a lot of love. A lot of love on this show, for sure. So you've got the series that's planned for farther than April, but you've got Luna series coming up on Monday the 10th. So much going on. [00:28:09] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:28:09] Speaker D: And something that's really special about this show is I'm actually recording a live album, so whatever happens in the show is going to be on Spotify. I mean, if something goes really poorly, I probably wouldn't release it, but I don't expect that to happen. [00:28:26] Speaker A: And when you do something like that, like a planned live album, like, with so much not that could go wrong. But like so much spontaneity, like so much that's not really in your control. Like working with like an audience. Do you just go with it and whatever comes out or is it something that you plan, like a couple takes of it, you know, or, or do you, do you let the audience know that you're recording an album? [00:28:55] Speaker D: Yes. Yeah, I'll definitely let them know. And if I may retake something, I could see a world in which that happens, but ideally I would just go through. I'm starting with some old songs from my first band that I put out two records with them when I was in college. And so I'm starting with a couple of those songs and then moving, moving into songs off of Girl Love, which is like the, the self titled record that I released last November, two Novembers ago. And then I'll be performing some brand new songs, including one song that's really special to me, which is a protest song in favor of trans rights, which I just think is. It's so important and timely right now. I wrote it before this administration happened, but I just think it's, it's just very timely. [00:29:57] Speaker A: Yeah, definitely timing. And fuck this current administration too, by the way. Yeah, so I'll just put, I'll just put that, I'll just put that on record. Like I've got my flags flying in the room that I'm in now. I've got my trans flags and my rainbows and. [00:30:13] Speaker D: Yeah, right. [00:30:14] Speaker A: Yeah, fuck that current administration. I would say that I'm going to get in trouble for that, but who am I going to get in trouble with? It's my show. I am so, again thankful that you took a couple moments out of your day to do this with me and talk about some of the important shows that you have coming up. We also have a full episode planned where you're going to come out here to the Dazzle Den and you'll get to see everything in person and we'll sit down and do a long form conversation coming up in real time this weekend. But you know, that'll be a couple weeks down the road when the episode airs. But so Girl Love, thank you so much for this. It's been awesome. Is there anything you want to want to say before we go? [00:31:04] Speaker D: You're so very welcome. And I just wanted to say thank you for having me on the show and I look forward to our longer conversation. [00:31:11] Speaker A: Yeah, it's going to be awesome. All right, cool. Well, thank you so much. All right, so that was my conversation with Girl Love and she will, like we just said, be on an upcoming episode of Unsigned518 doing a full in depth episode. So we'll get to know all about her and maybe even convince her to play a song or two live here in the desert then. But right now what we're going to do is play a girl love song here on the show. This one's called Dove and It's here on Unsigned518's Weekend Spotlight. [00:31:52] Speaker B: Do you know your name means like a dove? Soon as you left I looked it up and I don't know your sign But I'm getting serious Scorpio vibes. Cause you're my type. Jesus Christ, you look so gorgeous in that light. Soft glowing as the record skipped. Cause we forgot about it. Holy spirit. It's too soon to call it long but you move in me like a dove. And it wasn't just the leaves. We laughed through the whole thing and we both have other lovers. Monogamy, such a bummer. But that's all right. Jesus Christ, you look so gorgeous in that light. It was raining under the wolf moon. Lord, oh what a time to let things move. Holy spirit, it felt an awful lot like love when you move in me. Flying so high Bringing all the branches back to me through starlight. Maybe we found a place to call home. Jesus Christ, you look so gorgeous in that light. Like the first dawn on the first day I felt like God, I couldn't look away. Holy spirit, it's too soon to call it love but you moved in me, you moved in me as you move in me like a dove. [00:34:51] Speaker A: That's girl love with dove here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight. And that is just about it for me. But before I go, I want to check in with Metroland's hot singles. And if you don't know what Metroland's hot singles are, every month TJ Foster puts together a list of all the singles released least in the 518, or at least the ones that he can find. And he puts them on themetroland.com and you can find it right there on the front page. Just, you know, hot singles and, and find the list. But what I do then is he sends me the list and then I create an official Spotify playlist so that you can go and listen to them all in one, one stream and put, put it on shuffle and really get used to it and, and check out all the new shit coming out of the five and eight. There's, there's great stuff every month. But anyway, Every week what I do is I pull a song from the Metroland hot singles of the the current month and I play it on the show. So this week I'm going to play the latest from Deanna deluc. This one is called islands and it's here on unsigned 518weekend spotlight. [00:35:57] Speaker B: Anchor to some divided place where we sink to grave to notice you from across the room to see you like I do a perfect paper moon I don't know how your eyes fade red to gold and green to blue there's no safe harbor and no heroes to come through you're in the wind fades of sleeping limb you can't keep what you give I can't help wondering when you put me on were you staying calm? I heard it through the wall well no could give it all away Timeless cover story till one turn of phrase got loose desperate for answers and we'll find we. Your way is new when your breath is thin you're lost for words again but look before the fall a quarter till the dawn did you hesitate or did you slip away? Or was it by design soft and serpentine? I don't know how your eyes fade red to golden, green to blue there's no safe harbor and no heroes to come through Stay true my darling I will follow you down. There was an echo and.
