[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome to unsigned 51 8's Weekend Spotlight for the weekend of December 13, 2024. Got a great show coming up for you. Got new music from the Sugar hold, brand new music from Big Lettuce. Also going to dip into the Metroland Hot Singles for November playlist and check out a band you should know from our friends up north, and maybe even a Christmas song. But anyway, without further ado, let's get started. [00:00:32] Speaker B: Andy Scullen is such a good dude. The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to. He's got some cool stuff he'd like to share with you. Yeah, you. It's the weekend. You know what you should do? It's the weekend spotlight. The weekend. All right. The Weekend Spotlight on Sci Fi 1 8. [00:00:48] Speaker A: So up first, we have Twilight Drive at Nanola tomorrow night, Friday, December 13th. Show starts at 8pm, Twilight Drive, or of course, the Capital Region Premiere 90s group. There's Three Piece, but they all do multiple things while they're playing. They're really fun to see live, really fun to play shows with. My band has played shows with them, so go check them out. Friday night they're going to be at Ninola. Show starts at 8:00. And what we're going to do right now is I'm actually going to play a song from the Sugar Hole. This is their latest single called Ooh La La. And we're actually, when I say we, me and my band, Short Wave Radio Band, are playing with the Sugar hold and the Baton Killers this Saturday at Single Cut north as part of the holiday hootenanny. And for those that don't know the history, like, the three bands really kind of came up together. And we consist of a lot of moving parts and friends and relationships. And when the three of us get together, it's always a really, really great time. And the Baton Killers did their final show, you know, a year or more ago as Tiger Pa, the lead singer, moved away and he's back. So it is the return of the Baton Killers. So it's kind of the show that we didn't think was going to happen, but is happening. So what I'm going to do is, like I said, I'm going to play the latest song from the Sugar hold. Then I'm going to come back and we're going to talk to Mikey, who is the lead singer of the Sugar hold. And then we're also going to get Tigerpaw on the phone, who is lead singer of the Baton Killers, and we're going to talk A little bit about what folks can expect at Single Cut north for holiday hootenanny this Saturday. [00:06:56] Speaker D: Hey Andy, how you doing? [00:06:57] Speaker A: I'm doing fantastic. So when does the EP come out? [00:07:01] Speaker D: So the EP is going to come out on Friday. So we released Ooh La La a couple weeks ago. But the full ep, four new songs will be out on Friday, streaming everywhere, you know, band camp. You can purchase it if you want. It is available for pre order right. [00:07:15] Speaker A: Now and it's a four song ep. And what was the name of it? [00:07:21] Speaker D: Quickie. The Quickie EP or Quickie ep. The official name is Quickie et the Quickie ep. [00:07:27] Speaker A: I love that you've such. Such short and to the point names of, of your albums and stuff. [00:07:33] Speaker D: Yeah, dope, sweet. Quickie. Yeah, we, we were thinking about naming it, naming it rip. Yeah, but it, but it looks like Rip, you know. [00:07:43] Speaker A: Oh, right, right. Not like a bong Rip, because I got, you know, I go to Exactly. [00:07:47] Speaker D: Or like a. Like. Yeah, like even like Rip Curl, like the surf brand and stuff like that. [00:07:52] Speaker A: Or like ripping donuts in the parking lot, you know. [00:07:55] Speaker D: Exactly. You know, we like things that have a couple different meanings. So we ended up going with quickie. [00:08:01] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, that's true. That does have a bunch of meetings. Love that. So album is out Friday or album EP out Friday. And this weekend you're celebrating the release of the EP with a couple of friends and probably a couple of hundred spectators. [00:08:22] Speaker D: Yeah. Oh, definitely. You may know some of the folks that were playing with Andy, obviously, shortwave radio band. And then, you know, we were toying with if we would actually use this as a celebration of the EP release, because the show is honestly celebrating the return of the Baton Killers. We didn't want to steal any of their shine, but I got a text message from Tiger Paw, the lead singer of the Baton Killers, one day and he just said, the 14th is your EP release party. I said, okay, okay. [00:08:52] Speaker A: And you know, when Tiger Paw says. [00:08:54] Speaker D: You have to, you know, with you guys in Short wave and the Baton Killers, we have a lot of friends, but you guys are probably some of our tightest, oldest friends. So it really is special to be able to do that with you guys. [00:09:06] Speaker A: Yeah, totally. And I was saying before we went into the song, you know how great things always happen when the three bands come together. And since this is kind of a show that we didn't think was going to be able to happen because last year we said farewell to the Baton Killers. So it's. [00:09:24] Speaker D: It's just going to be that much. [00:09:26] Speaker A: More special and fun. And then the hootenanny is going on and all the vendors and. And Single Cut is just so fucking awesome. Like, I love that place. [00:09:36] Speaker D: I love support. They're. They're awesome. [00:09:39] Speaker A: Shout out. Sweet Tea. [00:09:40] Speaker D: Sweet Tea, she's the best. [00:09:42] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:09:43] Speaker D: So, yeah, really looking forward to getting back to Single Cut. I'm not sure if we've been there since. If we've played there since last year around this time, but we always do enjoy getting over there. And the beer is good. Good environment. I'm looking forward to checking out their new stage. [00:09:59] Speaker A: Oh, right, right, right. Yeah, I haven't played there since the new stage. [00:10:04] Speaker D: Yeah, Sweet Tea was sending me pictures as they were building it. So I was, I was seeing as it came along. I mean, it came along quickly, don't get me wrong. [00:10:12] Speaker A: Right, right, right. [00:10:13] Speaker D: But I'm really excited to see that and to get back for sure. [00:10:18] Speaker A: Yeah, it's going to be awesome. So this Saturday and show starts at like 5ish or so. [00:10:24] Speaker D: We're on first. [00:10:25] Speaker A: Yes. [00:10:25] Speaker D: Sugar holds on first. So get there early. [00:10:27] Speaker A: Get there early and definitely get there by five, We'll, We'll. We'll punk rock it up and try to, you know, hold off on starting the show to like 5:30. But I'm sure it'll run. [00:10:36] Speaker D: Run on the punk rock time. For sure. [00:10:38] Speaker A: Yeah. But also, you know, there's vendors there all day. The vendors and start at noon. Right? [00:10:43] Speaker D: Yeah. Tattoos. I actually, I'm going early so that I can get a tattoo. I'm gonna try, definitely. My wife is. I don't know if I want to be saran wrapped up while I'm playing. We'll see. [00:10:58] Speaker A: Right, right. Yeah. I don't know. I've thought about that, but I don't have any tattoos, so I don't know if my. If I want my first one to just be. Or even if I ever get one. I don't know if I want it to be a split second decision on one. Again, you could get the hat and. [00:11:12] Speaker D: Glasses and that would be. [00:11:13] Speaker A: Yeah, but I'm, you know, I'm like, currently right now not even wearing the hat, and I'm like, kind of, like, kind of trying to, like, I, you know, maybe steer away from it a little bit. Like. [00:11:24] Speaker D: No, no. When I picture you in my mind, you're wearing that orange hat, man. [00:11:27] Speaker A: I know, that's. I know, I know. But now I'm at the point where, you know, people know who I am. I don't have to wear a big beacon on my head being like, hey, remember me? [00:11:36] Speaker D: That's what it started as. [00:11:37] Speaker A: That's what it started as is my fear of being forgotten. Like, I hate the. Hey, yeah, I'm Andy. Remember we met and having people be like, I don't know. But it's like, you know, when you see the ding dong in the orange hat, you're like, I remember that guy, you know? [00:11:51] Speaker D: Yes. Unforgettable. [00:11:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:55] Speaker D: Hey, it's good branding. [00:11:57] Speaker A: It is good branding. And, like, I'm definitely sticking with it for the branding. But you may see the hat a little less. Like, I don't even think I'm bringing it on Saturday. Yeah, but it's more of a podcast thing anyway, you know? [00:12:11] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. Do you have any guesses as to what the sugar holds wearing on Saturday? [00:12:16] Speaker A: Is it something new? [00:12:19] Speaker D: It's not. No, no, nothing. It's like a minute off of the exit. You'd be silly not to go. It's centrally Located in the Capital district. It's so convenient. There's a few really great plants, really great bands playing that night. We got shortly Radio Man. You ever hear these guys? [00:15:26] Speaker A: Yeah, they're the best. The best band. [00:15:28] Speaker C: And a girl. There's a girl in there too. They're awesome. [00:15:30] Speaker A: I said there. I said there. I didn't say the gentleman like in that other post. [00:15:36] Speaker C: Yep. [00:15:37] Speaker A: That was me by the way, that responded to that. [00:15:40] Speaker C: We got. We got the Sugar hold playing. We're going to celebrate. They're releasing an EP this week called Quickie. Pretty excited about that. [00:15:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Just talked to Mikey just a minute ago. He says hi. [00:15:56] Speaker C: Oh my God. Hi Mikey. If you hear this. And then we have the palatial return of upstate New York's premier Killers cover band, the Baton Killers. We're going to be rocking the house. And earlier that day at Single Cut. There's like a bunch of wild stuff going on. If you just want to make a whole day of it from like 12 to 5. There's. I'm looking at all these vendors that are going to be there. There's. There's this thing called Bratty Moon. I don't know what that is, but I'm sure they're very nice and roundabout records. They could be selling records. [00:16:42] Speaker A: Most likely. [00:16:44] Speaker C: Yup. Devin Hudson tattoos. I think I went to high school with Devin Hudson. Did you know that? [00:16:51] Speaker A: I did not know that. [00:16:52] Speaker C: You want to hear a story about Devin Hudson? [00:16:54] Speaker A: I guess. Does Devin Hudson want the story told? [00:16:59] Speaker C: It's probably. Okay. So when I think I was in sixth grade, I had him over for a sleepover and our dad, my dad caught us watching a dirty movie in the morning and we got in a lot of trouble. Let's see, the sourdough swan is gonna be there. You still. Are you okay? [00:17:20] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm fine. [00:17:23] Speaker C: I imagine that's some sort of artisanal bakery. They probably. They probably focus really hone in on the sourdough starters. Andy, have you ever baked any sourdough before? [00:17:38] Speaker A: Yeah, Katie did. Well, I haven't myself. No. But Katie has like old school sourdough starter that like, you know, she keeps alive and feeds. And we do sourdough pizzas and sourdough breads and stuff. Yeah, yeah. [00:17:51] Speaker B: You gotta. [00:17:52] Speaker C: You gotta feed it every week. [00:17:53] Speaker A: Yeah, you know, I mean, I don't. My wife does, but that's. Yeah, she's kept it alive for many years now. [00:18:01] Speaker C: You know, like. Like the swan will be feeding the starter. We're going to be feeding the Capitol district like some really good entertainment that night. So stick around. After the craft fair, we're going to have a whole hootenanny. There's going to be food and, like, the best beer ever. We just love playing Single Cut. It's so much fun. And I just wanted to touch on. Have you heard from any family members about your recent portrayal of your great, great grandfather? [00:18:41] Speaker A: Yeah, I actually. I actually saw my dad just, like, a couple days ago. Yeah. And he saw me. He saw me smoking weed dressed as Santa. [00:18:52] Speaker C: Okay. [00:18:52] Speaker D: Now, did. [00:18:53] Speaker C: Was this something that your family talked about growing up or was this discovery through ancestry? [00:18:58] Speaker A: No, no. Oh, hell no. This was like that Norman Rockwell picture and, like, regular pictures of him and all that shit. That was like, in my house. My whole. And for those that don't know what we're talking about, who may not see it on social media, my. It's either great, great, or there might be another great. It's something, but I think it's great. I don't know. Great grandfather, but whatever. He was a Norman Rockwell Santa. And he's also. We're almost positive he's the Santa on the Coke cans. Because after he did work with Norman Rockwell and was on cover Saturday Evening Post, he did some Santa. Some Santa modeling work with Coke. And I'm pretty sure it's still his likeness on the. On the Coke can. But, yeah, no, it was not, like, a newly discovered thing. [00:19:46] Speaker C: So, folks, if you want to see, you know, some Rockwellian celebrity lineage, you'd be silly not to come to Single cut on the 14th. [00:19:59] Speaker A: You're not going to make me dress in a Santa suit, are you? [00:20:02] Speaker C: I mean, you can, however you feel most comfortable expressing yourself.
