[00:00:01] Speaker A: Welcome to unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight for the weekend of February 14, 2025. Got a great show coming up for you. Got music from Not Chinese Takeout. A live one from Carolyn Shapiro recorded right here in the Dazzle Den. Also Billy and the Great Western Postal Service, Maggot's Pizza and the latest from the Lichen. And we're gonna hear the first single from Shortwave Radio bands upcoming album. And for those that don't know, Short Wave Radio Band is the band that I am in. We have an album coming out and I'm gonna play the first single for you anyway. All coming up on this episode. So without further ado, let's get started.
[00:00:41] Speaker B: Weekend Spotlight the weekend alright the weekend Spotlight the weekend alright. Andy Scullin is such a good dude. The kind of guy that it's easy to talk to.
[00:00:52] Speaker A: He's got some cool stuff he'd like.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: To share with you. Yeah, you. It's the weekend. You know what you should do? It's the weekend sp.
[00:01:04] Speaker A: All right, so up first on Friday, Sad Dads and Not Chinese Takeout with a Valentine's Day emo cover show at will follow from 7 to 10. Dinner service will be by 2 for the road and that'll be available until 9 o'clock. And if you're not familiar with Sad Dads, they are a killer emo cover band. Like unbelievable. I would actually choose to see Sad Dads over most of the the bands that they cover. They do such a great job, really fun live shows and like I said, spot on cover. They're just amazing musicians, really great. So go check out Sad Dads and Not Chinese Takeout is one of those bands that had been on my radar for a little bit, but I admittedly had not, had not heard them. And then as I was getting this show ready, they came. You know, I was like, oh, not Chinese Takeout. So I decided that it was time to to check out their music. And it was a case of almost immediately I was like, huh, okay, I'm a fan of this band. So Not Chinese takeout gets the unsigned 518 definite stamp of approval. I listened to a bunch of their stuff and I think you should definitely go check them out on Spotify. They've got a bunch of releases out there and you should go check them out tomorrow night, Friday with Sad Dads at Will follow. They'll be playing from 7 to 10. Not sure who goes on first or whatever, but just get there early, have a couple beers, have some food from two for the Road and enjoy the the Valentine's Day Emo show. And right now what we're gonna do is play a song from not Chinese takeout. This one is called Chop and Fade Away and it's right here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight.
[00:03:34] Speaker B: Running, running away when you're stalling Causing the days of the starshine I'm alarmed when you say that it's coming Figured it stays still amazing and I can't figure it out why must I always feel the strain it takes I think to get it fall no, I want it all Running, running for days they're coming and they're coming from me I'm sorry if I don't make it through the day and I'm sorry if you want that for me and the silence takes it away and it's coming, coming for me and a coming for me and the silence takes it away and it's coming, coming for me I know.
[00:05:22] Speaker A: That'S not Chinese takeout. With Chop and Fade away from their 2024 EP Not For Me. And you can catch them with Sad Dads tomorrow night Friday at wolf Hollow from 7 to 10. So up next on Saturday, Bound by Fate in Skylerville are celebrating their five year anniversary with a five year anniversary party. And my band Shortwave Radio Band will be playing a two hour set. We're going to mix in originals and covers and we're going to play play a bunch of never before heard songs from our upcoming album. We've kind of taken it a little easy the last eight or nine months as far as gigging and whatnot because we've been putting all of our focus into creating an album with TJ Foster of the band Eerie. He's been been helming the whole thing. He's been the recording engineer, the mixing engineer and you know, it's been a, a cool experience. We've got eight original songs that's kind of span a few different genres. Like they're not just the garage punk rock that you're kind of used to hearing from us. Maybe a little Scott infused in there, but we have like a, a reggae song and there's like a kind of shoegazy like ballad and there's actually. Well, you know, I'm not even going to tell you the other one because it's going to be the next single and it's a surprise. You'll, you'll get it. But it's complete 180 from anything that you've ever heard from us and I think you're going to like it. So the album is Frequencies is the name of it and we decided on that kind of because it spans a bunch of genres and it's kind of, you know, if you're tuning the radio, you'd go to different frequencies and hear different stations and different types of music. And I kind of. I haven't confirmed with the band yet about playing the upcoming single that is coming out. I won't even tell you it's coming out later, but I told them I was going to record this episode and if they had objections, just let me know by. By this evening and. And I would. I would edit this part out. So I guess if you're hearing this part that means they. They did not object and everybody said it was cool. But anyway, enough of my bullshit. Frequencies is the upcoming album from Shortwave Radio Band. It'll be available sometime in the spring. We're still working on some things, but it's coming and anyway, right now it's the first single that'll be available in a couple weeks everywhere. This one's called Crash Site and It's here on unsigned 518's weekend spotl.
[00:08:17] Speaker B: The crash eye is a few miles away from here where the world oh is no longer a question this is bigger than me and you didn't take long for the razor wire fence Dark mini glasses those are really nice shades Gaslight explosion on the lone blue don't don't we never gonna know the truth is we have all that oh lie after lie do we ever realize the truth is hiding in plain sight Gotta wait the upcoming generation before the prepay program that kicks in we'll fight together or become zombies too no trace of the kids who disappear Just like the plane that vanished into thin air Some say you'll still hear voices in in the wood we never know the truth is we have all been sold lie of lie Won't we ever realize the truth is hiding in plain sight Late at night there's something at the door Some kind of lie that doesn't feel natural Tone we never gonna know the truth is we have all been sold lie after lie Won't we ever realize we're not alone here toe who's old we never gonna know the truth is we have all been so Hide after lie Won't we ever realize the truth is hiding in plain sight Just come.
[00:10:17] Speaker A: Down and sit there and turn Shortwave Radio band with Crash Site and that is from our upcoming album Frequencies that'll be available sometime in the spring. And if you would like to hear us Play some songs from the upcoming album. Basically you can hear them for the first time ever this Saturday at Bound by Fate. I believe we'll be playing from seven to nine. We're gonna do a two hour set, but get out there. It's their five year anniversary party and they've been supportive of us and other local artists pretty much since they opened their doors. So let's get out and support them. So if you're in the area, Bound by Fate this Saturday from 7 and I will be playing, but get there, you know, right when they open and start, start crushing beers and, and eating some food. All right. And up next this Sunday, Carolyn Shapiro will be at Kitcha Vibe playing some brunch songs from 11am to 1pm and if you haven't checked out Kitcha Vibe, do yourself a favor and go check it out. It's in Glens Falls. It's like the funkiest, coolest little layout. And the tea is delicious. The service was, was fantastic. And it's just a really cool place to, to hang out. And it would be a really cool place on a Sunday morning to, you know, grab some tea and maybe a scone or something and sit down and listen to some wonderful music from Carolyn Shapiro, which is happening Sunday from 11am to 1pm and what I'm gonna do right now is play a song from Carolyn Shapiro that she played here where I am standing in the dazzle Den just about a year ago. It was in February 2024. The song is called River Meets the Sea. And I'm actually gonna let Carolyn tell you a little bit about what she's gonna play for us.
[00:12:09] Speaker C: We're gonna play River Meets the Sea, which was the first single that I released.
And it's, it's a song about the Hudson River. I grew up outside of New York City in suburban New Jersey.
And if you know anything about suburban New Jersey, it's a pretty boring place to grow up. There's not much to do. And I was lucky because I lived so close to the Hudson and I had some really good friends that were the type of people that, you know, you could have fun doing absolutely nothing. You know, you could just be sitting in traffic and it's the greatest time of your life. So this is a song about that river and my good friends.
[00:12:45] Speaker A: Cool. And it's called River Meets the Sea.
[00:12:46] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:12:47] Speaker A: All right, well, let's listen to River Meets the Sea. It's live here in the Dazzle Den from Carolyn Shapiro.
[00:13:34] Speaker B: Times.
River meets the sea where the river meets the sea where the river meets the sea I could stare out that city now driving down Come on by Watch your car driver.
Nowhere to go on.
[00:16:27] Speaker A: All right, so that was River Meets the Sea by Carolyn Shapiro live here in the Dazzle Den. And that was recorded back in February of 2024. So up next on Sunday we have a honky tonk dance night at no Fun. Doors open at 5:30. A Texas two step lesson with Mike starts at 6 and runs until 7:00. And then we have Billy and the Great Western postal service and DJ Tex starting off at 7:15. And what we're going to do right now is hear a song from Billy and the Great Western Postal Service. This one's called Boxcars and It's from their 2023 EP Water and Gin right here on Unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight.
[00:17:31] Speaker B: There's a lesson learned in starting over again I won't be lonely Stories like me are bound to come running around Stare out at the tracks it's as true as gospel facts Find the one that'll finally bring them home but when you take my body and you lay it down make it someplace I've never been where they would call me brother but they never know my name I'd rather be a stranger if it matters all the same and I'm out here searching for the rail that will take me home from here But I search for needs to resist in the place that I the one I like best is the one that I'll be leaving in an hour but when you take my body and you lay it down make it someplace I never knew where they would call me brother but they never know my name I'd rather be a stranger if it matters all the same this world will take take your love It'll hollow out and rescue tomorrow But I'm done chasing m car from Chesapeake down to the real grain.
Cuz I thought from the beginning that I have it figured out by the time that they laid me in the ground but when you take my body and you lay it down make it someplace I marry them where they call me brother but they never know my name I'd rather be a stranger if it matters all the.
[00:20:03] Speaker A: That's Billy and the Great Western Postal Service with boxcars here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. And you can catch them on Sunday at honky tonk dance night at no Fun Again. Doors open at 5:30. And I'm realizing that, you know, if you timed your day right, you could catch Carolyn Shapiro in Glens Falls at kitcha vibe at 11:00 until 1:00. You know, go grab lunch somewhere, maybe go home and take a nap after all those mimosas or whatever and then get your shit together and get back down to Troy for Honky Tonk Dance night starting at 5:30. Sounds like a great idea to me. So what we're gonna do right now is check in with my friends Jake and Mike in Bad Music Club and see what band they think we should know this week.
Maggot Pizza has less than 100 monthly listeners and it's Alien Techno Dance Medal from Niagara, Ontario. Come listen and dance, dance, dance all my little maggots. Nobody is doing what these guys are doing. This is masterful and completely original Band of the year. I'd say so. I fucking love this band. I cannot wait to catch these guys live alongside the other tweaking geekers at Vertigo. This album is perfect in every way. The latest Release is a 5 song EP. Everything was fine until the Maggots which came out 9-20-2034. Try a delicious new topping of your pizza today and check it out.
[00:21:52] Speaker B: Sa the way they move day and night the party closed making despair grandmother wall break down these two trickin on appeared when they came crashing down from space in the day speakers shake the ground you take bir we know how just get in your arms appear when they came crashing down from in that day speaker shake the ground you take her take her out in fast day good danger SA.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: That is Maggots Pizza with tweaking geekers brought to us by my friends Jake, Mike and their producer Que in Bad Music Club. And every week they send me a band that they think we should know. But they do it much more than once a week. So follow them on Instagram Bad Club Media and you'll check out all their bands. You should know they do it several times a week. It might even be Monday through Friday. They do it a lot. And I found so many great bands through just these two dudes recommendations it's insane. So between between me and them, we got you covered, you know. So go check out Bad Music Club from Bad Club Media and do it do it now.
So before we go, I always like to play a song off Metroland's hot singles in your area playlist. Every month TJ Foster puts together the hot singles in your area singles released by 518 artists. He hands that list off to me and I create the official Spotify playlist so that every month you can can go back and and continue to Listen to all the 518 releases. Or you could combine all those playlists and just make one fucking huge mega playlist. But anyway, every week what I do is I pick a song from the current, you know, hot singles in your area playlist and I play it on the show. And a lot of the times it's, you know, maybe the first time I've heard of the band. It may be someone I'm familiar with. I. I don't really have a. A system to it. I just kind of pick. And this time I picked the latest from the band, the Lycan. This one's called Memento. And I'm gonna have to say the song kicks ass. I listened to it several times while I was getting ready to record the episode and I had it cranked here in the dazzle den and it had the windows rattling. So you know, that's a. A good, good sign for a rockin song. But anyway, the Lycan Memento right here on unsigned 518's Weekend Spotlight. And make sure you go check out Metroland
[email protected] and check out the Spotify playlist. Just check, just type in Metroland now hot singles. It'll come up. So anyway, the lichen memento unsigned 5 grenades weekend spotlight.
[00:29:06] Speaker B: Sage long I've lived at his fears Listen through the wall of our chef doesn't be for this life or big for the next.
The scissors that cut up the cards we've been dealt no not the hand we hold it's the fray and the route what keeps me from letting go?
You jam the gun in my hand you'll never be told I am not sleeping light up you know like running home I am Lorenzo Rhyme that sound it's the free in the row what keeps me from letting go?
You jam the gun in my hand you'll never be told I am not sleeping I hope you know that's what I went down.
When did this begin?
When did this begin?
Sa what keeps me from letting go?
You jam a gun in my hand you'll never be told I am not sleeping light up you know life got a hope Nothing for you, nothing for me.
If you lose your way flat out and rain eyes I win you just push.
Wow.
[00:33:16] Speaker A: That is the Lycan with memento here on unsigned 518's weekend spotlight. And that is it for me.
