[00:00:01] Speaker A: He was born on a Saturday in 73. He loves park rock music. Finding the 13 cabin in the desert on the beach guitar with a short wind radio back his motherfucking Andy scolding look at motherfucker. Cause here he comes Andy.
[00:00:25] Speaker B: Wearing his.
[00:00:26] Speaker C: Orange hat so this first event we have coming up is singer songwriter showcase at Sweetside Records, put on by House of M. It's featuring Jay Mullen, the Bandit, Queen of Sorrows, Angelina Valeni, and James Mullen. And I had a chance to talk with James Mullen. And he's James Mullen not only of Cesatlanis, of James Mullen and the Strangers, but also House of M. The m in House of M is Mullen. So I'm going to talk to James and find out a little bit about what he's got going on. This is not the first thing that he's done at Sweetside Records, and he's really putting some cool shit together. So let's go to the phone and see what's up. What's up, James?
[00:01:06] Speaker D: Hey, Andy. How's it going, man? Hear from you again?
[00:01:08] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. It's good to talk to you. You know, I'm having a great day, like, because I normally work for ten hour days at work. So when a holiday comes up where everybody gets Monday off and I have Mondays off anyway, what that means for me is that I just work the normal days that I work, but they're 2 hours shorter each day. So, like, sounds great. I'm like, boom, yeah, 230. And I'm already done with work for the day. Fuck, yeah. So, yeah. How are you, man?
[00:01:34] Speaker D: Pretty good, man. Just actually just got back to work from my day job. I had the last week off, took some vacation time because we had a few big gigs last week, but now we're taking a couple weeks to relax on the seas, Atlantis side of things, and I'm doing some solo stuff.
[00:01:51] Speaker C: Nice. And then I guess that kind of brings us to what we're talking about today. And House of M has a songwriter series coming up. And that's tomorrow, Friday, right?
[00:02:04] Speaker D: Yes, yes.
[00:02:05] Speaker C: Tomorrow, tomorrow as this episode airs, you know. Yeah.
So, yeah. Tell me a little bit about what. What you got going on there.
[00:02:14] Speaker D: Sure. So, yeah, this is sort of. I've been working with Sweetside for a little bit under a year now. I think it'll be. August will be like the year anniversary of the first show I did there. I think this is the fifth one our bands played there together.
[00:02:28] Speaker C: Correct. In January.
[00:02:30] Speaker D: Ed, this is a great guy. He's the owner it's a great little shop. He's got an awesome selection, some really great prices on things, and he's cool enough to basically let us do the diy, multi act, local music show thing right in his shop window, which is really awesome.
This Friday, we're going to be doing more of an acoustic singer songwriter revive style show that I've done there in the past. A lot of it has been more like full band rock or punk shows, but this is something that we're trying out, and I'm going to be doing another similar one of this style in August, actually, but stay tuned for that. This one is going to be my brother, Jay Mullen, kicking things off, coming into town from Burlington, Vermont, the Bandit, Queen of Sorrows, who is basically a traveling folk hero. She travels the country in her band full time and just plays music wherever she happens to be and travels the country. I know she was in Toronto and Buffalo the last couple days, so she'll be coming here from there and stopping here on her way to Burlington.
Angelina Valente will be playing with us.
Everybody knows that she's a total pro and one of the hottest singer songwriters in this region right now. So we're really excited to have her.
[00:03:45] Speaker C: Totally. That's a stacked lineup, man.
[00:03:48] Speaker D: And me, myself, I'll be doing a set of solo music that you haven't heard me play with sees Atlantis, if that's what you're familiar with me from. So that'll be really cool and fun for me to get to do. I do it every once in a while. Not as much as I play with the band.
[00:04:02] Speaker C: Yeah. And you may not realize, you know, obviously, you're known as, like the front man for season Atlantis, which is primarily, not even primarily, it's a rock outfit, you know, but your solo stuff leans more folk music, right?
[00:04:16] Speaker D: Yeah, definitely. Folk singer songwriter, acoustic americana.
Probably the biggest rock influence on my solo style would be something like Bruce Springsteen heartland rock.
Definitely. You know, some Bob Dylan, some Conor Roeburst of bright eyes, Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, some Jackson Brown, stuff like that.
Johnny Cash even.
[00:04:40] Speaker C: Cool. That's awesome. I love that. And so I was saying before we, before we got rolling that, that I had your brother on unsigned 518 and his episode will actually be coming out as this episode airs. It'll be the next episode, so it'll be this coming Tuesday. And he did a couple of songs live in the studio, acoustic songs, and it was the first time I'd met him. And it was like one of those things where, like, it happens all the time, like, when you become familiar with somebody, like, through social media, and then, like, you meet them and you're like, wait, we've never actually met because it would just. So. Hey, what's up, man? How you doing? All right. That was really cool. And also Bandit, Queen of Sorrows. Like, I. You know, because when I was putting ideas for this show together and, you know, I had talked to you, and, you know, we've known for a couple days that I was gonna feature your show, and so I was like, who's Bandit, queen of sorrows? I have not heard of her. So I was listening to her music. Like, her music is unreal. Like, super emotional. Like, you know what I mean? Just between. Between you and me and everybody who's listening. Like, I was listening to her, and one of her songs made me fucking cry. Like, I'm sitting at my desk doing work, and I'm like. I'm like, oh, shit. Like, yeah, really good.
[00:06:01] Speaker D: We actually met. We met through a DIY tour posting group on Facebook.
[00:06:06] Speaker C: Oh, no way.
[00:06:07] Speaker D: And we basically set up two shows for her last year. One was at no fun and the other was at Nola, and she came through, we had a great time, and decided to have her back in the region on her summer run, like, early summer run this. This year, and ended up being able to set things up with that at Sweetside. That's the thing I love about the record store. It's, like, such an interesting, like, subversion of your typical multiband gig or any kind of gig, even, like, people, I feel like on the local level, you're so used to playing the bar circuit or the club circuit or, you know, it's really cool to do, like, a gig in a record store, and musicians really seem to enjoy that, you know, just as much as the fans do.
[00:06:48] Speaker C: Yeah. And when we were there, you know, when short wave played with Ceeze and, you know, the owner was there, like, you know, I was looking at, like, kind of, like, gauging his reaction and his, you know, and he, like, just seemed so, like, into it and so, like, he was, like, in his environment with, like, you know, this raucous rock show going on and, like, yeah, really cool to see.
[00:07:13] Speaker D: He spends some records once in a while. I know he does some djing.
[00:07:17] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:07:18] Speaker D: He has told me before, you know, he doesn't take any of the money from the doors on our shows. That all goes back to all the performers.
I don't take any of it either. If I'm not performing, that goes strictly to the performers. For the night, whoever they might be, roughly. We usually run 45 minutes, sets and all that. You're free to sell any merch while you're there. And actually, I know that Ed keeps some local t shirts and vinyl records and cds and the like on display as well to sell, so you're welcome while you're playing there to approach him about that and see what the download is there. I'm sure he'd love to have you in his collection.
[00:07:53] Speaker C: That store is so cool. I mean, Robert plant shops for vinyl, sir. You know? Shit, yeah, he does.
[00:07:58] Speaker D: That was probably, that was probably.
I was so bummed I wasn't there when I was there. Robert Plant is like one or one a, for me, all time singers with Freddie Mercury, it's really. It goes between those two, in my opinion.
[00:08:12] Speaker C: Yeah. And he was, he was shopping.
[00:08:13] Speaker D: I would have been just, I don't really get Starstruck, but I would have been pretty starstruck.
[00:08:18] Speaker C: Yeah. Oh, yeah. I would have definitely been starstruck. All right, well, cool. I won't hold you any longer. But before we go, I think we were talking about what song we should play or what artists we should play. And I had reached out to Bandit, Queen of Sorrows, and asked if she'd be cool if I played a song. And then you reached out and also asked. And then she got back to us both almost at the exact same time. But she was very grateful and happy to have us play her music. So I'm super psyched for anybody who has not heard of her because I'm telling you, man, like, and this isn't even the song that, like, really gut punched me. Like, and this one's powerful too, but, like, great, great music. And it's. What time does it start, James?
[00:09:04] Speaker D: So we're going to be starting the doors at 05:00 with music at six, but I believe the shop is open before that. You have to check on their pages, but I'm fairly certain. And if that's the case, you can show up earlier and hang out, browse the selection, maybe buy some records. You'll also be able to probably during the show. And Ed also sometimes will do some kind of posting where he'll be like, hey, mention this post show tonight for a discount on whatever, you know, so that keep your eyes peeled on their social media, give them a follow. They're a great local record store in Glens Falls.
I know they do a lot of local of the record events as well. I know they've been at single cut before for their final events. So they're awesome. If you want to support local record shops, that's a great one. To great way to do it is to come out to these shows and buy some records.
[00:09:49] Speaker C: Hell, yeah. So Bandit, queen of sorrows again going to be playing with J. Mullen, Angelina Valeni and James Mullen. And right now we're going to listen to a song from Bandit, Queen of Sorrows. This one's called Caroline. And it's here on unsigned 500 eighteen's weekend spotlight.
[00:10:08] Speaker E: Oh, heaven help me, look at our.
[00:10:11] Speaker D: Sheep.
[00:10:15] Speaker E: I got a gay little home waiting for me she gives me sweet, sweet peace of mind oh, my darling here I summertime baking the shirt on my back Caroline sneaking up to my neck she keeps me cool in the day need to shades my nights bends my slides with a smile every light on my my darling she's alive like I love nightly holding me up.
[00:11:22] Speaker D: She.
[00:11:22] Speaker E: Gives me hope when I'm down in my luck nobody knows me like she do when I'm low with a wig on her knees catch me high oh my darling I should really eat Caroline I hit the road for months at a time Mississippi back in the park she keep me whole but impressed she never been straight too far away from me but I know she's good to me I should eat cavalry nothing so far as when I'm holding my shriek of life I stop my place and time to keep these moments from fading but hurry all these moments of caroline oh, heaven help me look out about babies beside me I know this is love she gives it soft and sweet keep me busy, give me all that I need only nothing by my sweet heaven don't you know rich man's go no catalytic don't need no itch I can show beneath the pipe if I got you I got it all I need keep me coming dark down the light I should leave every light nothing shall find when I my sweet Caroline I'd bring the moon back down if she hurts me I wouldn't deny if she urged me ever I.
[00:14:37] Speaker C: Bandit, queen of sorrows with Caroline. And you can catch her with Angelina Valeni and James Mullen and Jay Mullen at Sweetside records on Friday. So up next, there's a show happening at the hollow. There's a band that is celebrating their 21st anniversary as a band in the region. And I had a chance to talk to Charlie, who is the bass player of hot cousin. And we're going to find out a little bit about what they got going on. So let's see. Let's see what's going on with Charlie. Hey, what's up, Charlie?
[00:15:07] Speaker B: Hey, how you doing?
[00:15:08] Speaker C: I am fantastic. You know, it's springtime, sun is out, there's lots of. Lots of good things happening. And you've turned 21. Well, I mean, I guess not you specifically, but hot cousin has turned 21 and you're doing a little party for it. So I guess tell the folks a little bit about what you got going on.
[00:15:29] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:15:30] Speaker B: So hot cousins turning 21, we can kind of get rid of our fake ids now. That's kind of nice.
[00:15:35] Speaker C: That's nice.
[00:15:37] Speaker B: So, yeah. So on Saturday, June 1, we're having a party at the hollow. Big celebration of many, many years of being together and rocking out. So really excited.
[00:15:50] Speaker C: Nice. And so is it just you guys playing or there are other acts on there?
[00:15:56] Speaker B: No, we have an opening act, the men who love music or who loved music, which is Howard Glassman's band, many of you must know from running Valentine's and the low beat. And it's his 60th birthday, so it's a real honor to get to do that with him.
[00:16:12] Speaker C: That's good. So what time does everything kick off then?
[00:16:16] Speaker B: I believe it. Stores seven, show at eight, almost five.
[00:16:20] Speaker C: Well, congratulations on 21 years and I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to talk, talking me for a couple minutes. So thank you so much.
[00:16:30] Speaker B: No, thank you for acknowledging it. I said, I think it's gonna be a really good time, you know, hope you come out and people can have a good time.
[00:16:40] Speaker C: Hell yes. All right, so thank you again, Charlie of hot cousin.
[00:16:44] Speaker B: All right, thank you.
[00:16:45] Speaker C: All right, so in the last event we have is Sunday at no fun. It's suns with 100 psychic dreams. Retail drugs, an apostrophe beats. Orchestra and sons are a touring band out of Montreal.
Electronic music on the darker side, I guess you could say. But you should go check that out. That's, again, Sunday at no fun show starts at 07:00 and what we're going to do right now is play some music from 518 artist 100 psychic dreams. This one's called Advanced Candle Magic and it's here on unsigned 500 eighteen's weekend spotlight.
That was advanced candle magic from 160 psychic dreams. And that's it for this week's show. And I again implore you to do your own digging and find out what's going on in the area because I'm. When I say scratching the surface, it's like such an understatement. I'm just picking a couple things. I record the show in about a half an hour's time when I get out of work and I don't really do any research going into it, I just kind of dig around and find some shows or in talking with people the past weekend, if I know a show is coming up, like, if someone says, hey, I have this show, that's a great way to get it on by just saying, you know, reaching out to me and saying, hey, Andy, I have a show coming up this weekend that I would like spotlighted. And that's really the best way, because then I don't have to go looking for stuff because I'm a busy man. Anyway, that is it for me. I am Andy Scullen. This is unsigned five and eight's weekend spotlight, and I'll see you on the road.
